“Usually a well-thought answer makes an aggressor think twice.” ~Helio Gracie
Fundamentally, Jiu Jitsu is the practice of mindset and technique meant to provide anyone with the tools to effectively control an aggressor. This applies to a self defense situation as well as practicing in classes in the Academy with partners and engaging in sport Jiu Jitsu in tournaments. Our adults Jiu Jitsu program is designed to provide the basic and more advanced techniques needed to be physically effective in these situations, as well as mental concepts to empower individuals to improve themselves in Jiu Jitsu, and in all aspects of life.
“Jiu Jitsu is for the protection of the individual: the older man, the weak, the child, the lady and
the young woman; anyone who doesn’t have the physical attributes to defend themselves.”
~Helio Gracie
This quote expresses the concept that Grandmaster Helio Gracie developed – that through the application of technique, position, and leverage anyone can learn to defend themselves more effectively if attacked, even if the attacker is bigger and stronger. Our self defense program is designed to provide training in basic and effective techniques of deterring an attacker from continuing their aggression. Physical size and strength are considered secondary to mindset and knowledge of fundamental Jiu Jitsu techniques. Through straightforward and understandable classes in these concepts anyone can learn how to effectively defend themselves if necessary.
Our program offers judo for kids and judo for adults interested in learning about this amazing Olympic sport and non-aggressive form of self-defense.
Whether your goal is recreation, exercise, fitness classes, self-defense, competition, discipline, judo rank, kata study, etc. you will learn some of the secrets of judo as a martial art. The harder you work and longer you train and study, the further up the ranking system you can progress.
Kodokan judo was created in 1882 by Jigoro Kano, Shihan, a Japanese educator. The fact that it is included in the Japanese secondary education system to this day is evidence that the founder intended it to play an important role in the growth and education of the youth of Japan. We emphasize the central Judo principle underlying training and development of mutual welfare and benefit.
Judo as a sport was brought into the Olympics in 1964. Many of our hardest working athletes have experienced success in competition with medalists in local and state competition, in addition to medalists in both junior and senior national events including the USA Jr. Olympics.

School Schedule
Most classes begin with a “warm up” consisting of stretching and movement exercises, most of which help build skills needed in live training with a partner. This is typically followed by demonstrations of techniques by an instructor, and practice of these techniques with a partner. Finally, most classes end with a live training session during which students are paired with a training partner, and they may try out their skills with techniques against a resisting opponent.
